Winter-Showcase [2007-2011]
Scraping left-over bits of powder from everywhere we came up with quite a few great shots on this Austria roadtrip. No wonder, because when shooting with Timo Hermeler it’s usually impossible not to return with gems like this. [St. Anton, Austria. 2008]

A few weeks ago I was asked to setup a showcase series with my favorite wintersports photos for the popular Tacky website. But as they have a strict policy of not showing ski-photos, which I love taking, I decided to upload the whole series of 44 images onto my own website too. I’m a wintersports photographer in a broad sense, I hope this shows a bit of what I love doing so much and why. It’s a story into my work, I hope you enjoy it! Click here for the full gallery!

Winter-Showcase [2007-2011]
Simply the best view in the Alpes, high on top at Les 2 Alpes watching over the Mt.Blanc. Privileged! [Les 2 Alpes, France.2007]

Winter-Showcase [2007-2011]
There’s no better start to a skitest photoshoot than this! Fresh pow, a deserted skiresort and a mountain with a perfect angle. Even better when it’s snowboardcross coach Frank Germann kicking ass! [Bad hofgastein, Austria.. 2009]

Winter-Showcase [2007-2011]
As the Dutch Ski Associations head photographer I also do the skiing. From a photography point of view a very worthwhile job, espcially if you get photos like these from the champ; Alwin de Quartel. [Schladming, Austria. 2009]

Winter-Showcase [2007-2011]
The Belgium freestyle champsionships is an insane party week that features some amazing snowboarding. Especially the kickers are always huge and Seppe Smits knows what to do with them. [Les 2 Alpes, France. 2010]

Winter-Showcase [2007-2011]
Bad light is no excuse for bad photos. Though it does help when your subject is Richard Molenaar, one of the most stylish skiiers I know, dressed in near-fluor colors. Ans yes, this is very close! [Sölden, Austria. 2011]

Winter-Showcase [2007-2011]
The Berghuis sisters have become like sisters to me after all these years of shooting. But Britt somehow managed to avoid getting a decent powder photo taken. Then, suddenly, it all came together: a small stretch of fresh cold powder that needed to be shredded. After a small discussion we both ran to our positions and this was the result. Ten minutes later that whole stretch was completely done for by a zillion tourists. [Les 2 Alpes, France. 2007]

Winter-Showcase [2007-2011]
Perhaps one of my all-time favorite ski-photos. It all came down to a matter of good timing and Gebke Compeer understood just that. To me it just shows the ultimate freedom of beeing in the snow. [Bad hofgastein, Austria. 2009]

Winter -Showcase [2007-2011]
After a long testweek photoshoot it is fun to fool around a bit with a massive block of icey snow, leftover from the Hannibal show on the Sölden glacier. Rens de Wild knows what to do with it. [Sölden, Austria. 2011]

A weird combinatio took me all along the South African Coast and inland: sharks & hotels. A nice report on some of the nicest hotels in South Africa along the Route of the African Sun. Published in 2007 for Tulp Magazine.

One of the nicest hotels I’ve ever had the pleasure of overnighting can be found near the Johannesburg Airport, little over twenty minutes North of the hectic and largest South African city is Pretoria, the legislative Capital. Before hitting that town, famous for its abundant Jacaranda Trees, in a hidden and very nice neighborhood you will find a Villa turned into a hotel for Kings, their website says it all and nothing of it is overstated. What an incredible place!

Click on “full screen” for the high-res slideshow:

A magnificent villa with sweeping views across the treetops of the historical Jacaranda City. Set in tranquil gardens, teeming with birds, it is no wonder that Illyria is often referred to as a “little paradise”.

Upon entering through the wrought iron gates, a fairytale ambience, reflecting the epitome of gracious and romantic living unfolds, complete with white gloved butlers discreetly working their magic to please.

Unrivalled personalized service, exclusivity and luxury are a given at this intimate haven. Fine antiques, 17th century tapestries, soft classical music and exquisite cuisine have contributed to Illyria’s standing as a sought-after oasis of tranquility, refined beauty and charm.

It comes as no surprise that Illyria House has become a destination in its own right, a unique, nostalgic, colonial experience, highly appreciated by the discerning traveler, and the secret retreat of royalty, heads of state and celebrities alike.

Services rendered by your personal butler include organizing historical tours, sports activities, country picnics, individualized shopping outings and transfers to attractions in the city and surrounding areas. Guests may enjoy beauty treatments in the magical wellness spa in the secret garden or in the privacy of their rooms.

Secluded yet centrally located, a stay at Illyria House is ideal in combination with a luxury rail journey, wildlife safari or Indian Ocean island resort, and holds the promise to add an unforgettable authentic experience in colonial African hospitality.

Eleven pages from one of the nicest islands I have been to: the spectacularly beautiful Gran Canaria. For some reason 99% of the tourists stay in the horrible concrete and beach misery of the Playa del Inglés and other soutside resorts while the rest of the island is a heaven of beauty and peace.

For the largest travel Magazine in the Netherlands, ANWB REIZEN, we did a report on six of the many fantastic nature walks that you can do. Keep an eye open on my website for a Favorite Views, coming later this year from Gran Canaria.

For a lot more info, visit the REIZEN website with the Gran Canaria article and the details of the six walks and a couple of amzing car trips.

Just won the Winner Caribbean Travel Writer Award 2008 for best Dutch article on the Caribbean! The article on “Caribbean Island Hopping” was published in Tulp Magazine. View the pdf here.

My winning article:

As I’m working on a series of panoramic stitched images from Mt.St.Helens I figured it would be nice to upload a Quicktime Panorama I made when we reached the top. Quite a climb on the winter route with 6 hours of going up and 4 hours going down. Unbelievable experience though as the mountain, that blew in 1980 with a force of 500 Hiroshima atom bombs, is still rumbling and smoke comes out of the crater.

Walking through the snow proved not as easy either as it was getting quite slushy as late in the season (May), fortunately we had some proper boots with us that we had to rent in order to be able to rent crampons. Annoyingly heavy we felt quite stupid having to carry those along but they proved to be good insulation from the wet snow and provided quite a bit of tracking too. Good thing we got them anyway.

This is defintely a route a person should climb, the last bit was a bit tough but boy was it worth the view (and we got lucky it all cleared up nicely).

More info on this trip here on my site. Panoramic images coming soon!

This one came in a bit late. My article on Caribbean Island Hopping for the Belgium Feeling Magazine (a glossy which is also available in the Netherlands) was published last year October. The travel-report focussus on travelling between Caribbean Islands like Saba, St.Maarten/St.Martin, St.Eustatius, Tortola, Antigua and Dominica.

Finally got a video that was aired in Rotterdam on RTV Rijnmond last year on my work as a wintersport/snowboard photographer. It’s in Dutch though, the item was taped at the Oxbow Opening of the 2007 season in Les Deux Alpes (France).

Today in the Sp!ts, the second largest newspaper in the Netherlands (500.000 copies), two articles: one on climbing Mt.St.Helens and one on Scuba diving Vancouver Island’s Barkley Sound, also known as the Emerald Paradise.
