<p>A three-day visit to an island which is ten hours by plane and a couple hours in jetlag. Crazy? Not really, considering I was there to photograph the famous Caribbean Carnaval on the tiny Dutch Antilles island of <a href="http://www.aruba.com" target="_blank">Aruba</a>. It&#8217;s the second-largest carnaval celebration in the whole caribbean and famous for its laid-back atmosphere and accessibility. </p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/rud-gr/4368216070/" target="_blank" title="Carribean Carnaval in Aruba by Rud-gr, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4058/4368216070_43722feb22.jpg" width="500" height="333" alt="Carribean Carnaval in Aruba" /></a></p>

<p>And boy was it worth the trip! Two days of sunny and happy people parading the streets of both major towns on the island: the very easy-goinh parade on Saturday in San-Nicolas and the massive and crowded Sunday main event in Oranjestad. Hours and hours of incredibly colorful people and costumes. I don&#8217;t think I&#8217;ve seen so many feathers. I guess the images speak for themselves, please enjoy and make sure you&#8217;re in the neighborhood next year!</p>

<p><strong>Some guys have all the luck I guess</strong>, quite often I feel like I&#8217;m one of them but last week there was no doubt about it whatsoever. After doing a small <a href="http://www.telegraaf.nl/reiskrant/2662062/__Duiken_vanuit_een_helicopter__.html" target="_blank">press-release</a> for the Telegraaf (the largest Dutch newspaper) on heli-diving in Curaçao, which is exclusively organized by a good friend of mine he suddenly asked me if I&#8217;d like to do it myself tomorrow?<br />
After less than a nanosecond, a huge smile on my face and a big &#8220;<strong>Are you kidding me?</strong>&#8221; things were taken care of and a day later we were setting our gear up on a small industrial platform near the huge oil-harbor of Willemstad. With me were Belgium adventurer <a href="http://www.marcsluszny.com/" target="_blank">Marc Sluszny</a>, underwater photographer <a href="http://www.wetwebmagazine.nl/" target="_blank">Peter Verhoog</a> and <a href="http://www.tours-magazin.de/" target="_blank">Walther Bruckschen</a>, a German Journalist, the lucky bunch so to speak!</p>
<p><object width="500" height="400"><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="movie" value="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=4940796&amp;server=vimeo.com&amp;show_title=1&amp;show_byline=1&amp;show_portrait=0&amp;color=00ADEF&amp;fullscreen=1" /><embed src="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=4940796&amp;server=vimeo.com&amp;show_title=1&amp;show_byline=1&amp;show_portrait=0&amp;color=00ADEF&amp;fullscreen=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" width="500" height="400"></embed></object></p>
<p>As <strong>a heli-dive is not completely without danger</strong> we had to do a full-gear practice inside the hangar which had a very good airco. Just imagine practicing this sort of thing with full wetsuit and heavy scuba gear in the soaring 35 degree weather of this tropical paradise! Most importantly is the jumping out of the heli: if this isn&#8217;t done in perfect sync the heli can easily tilt and that&#8217;s something you don&#8217;t want 2 meters above the surface of a sea!<br />
<strong>The trick is a third person inside the heli</strong> that holds both divers hands while they climb outside and hang backward fully. Literally your faith is in this guys hands as he controls the moment to drop, it&#8217;s simply out of your hands.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/34439638@N08/3585442874/" target="_blank"class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium" title="Helidiving the wreck of the Superior Producer."><img class="alignnone" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3554/3585442874_b5e3ff9e78.jpg" alt="Helidiving the wreck of the Superior Producer." width="500" height="375" /></a><br />
<em>George from <a href="http://www.blueskieshelicopters.com/" target="_blank">Blue Skies</a> Helicopters.</em></p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/34439638@N08/3585442162/" target="_blank" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Small" title="Helidiving the wreck of the Superior Producer."><img class="alignnone" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3380/3585442162_cff24e7893_m.jpg" alt="Helidiving the wreck of the Superior Producer." width="250" height="180" /></a> <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/34439638@N08/3584635457/" target="_blank" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Small" title="Helidiving the wreck of the Superior Producer."><img class="alignnone" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2428/3584635457_cff9be9a99_m.jpg" alt="Helidiving the wreck of the Superior Producer." width="250" height="180" /></a><br />
<em>The Amazing view over Willemstad from the chopper.</em></p>
<p>And what a drop it is! After an intensely beautiful flight under the impressive Julianabrug, along <strong>Willemstad and all its bright colors</strong>, the low pass over the Pontjesbrug with many people waving and taking photographs (the helicopter is open so they see you in full scuba-gear) it&#8217;s time for a sharp right turn over the stunning blue seawater and the approach to the wreck site. Niels Jorissen, the owner of <a href="http://www.divechartercuracao.com" target="_blank">DivecharterCuracao </a>and the organizer of these heli-dives, is already waiting with his 25 feet Tornado RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) so all we have to do is climb out and wait for the right hovering height of the helicopter.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/34439638@N08/3584672781/" target="_blank" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Small" title="Helidiving the wreck of the Superior Producer."><img class="alignnone" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3379/3584672781_82db00811c_m.jpg" alt="Helidiving the wreck of the Superior Producer." width="165" height="240" /></a> <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/34439638@N08/3585479202/" target="_blank" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Small" title="Helidiving the wreck of the Superior Producer."><img class="alignnone" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3416/3585479202_629d4ecc90_m.jpg" alt="Helidiving the wreck of the Superior Producer." width="165" height="240" /></a> <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/34439638@N08/3584672979/" target="_blank" class="tt-flickr tt-flickr-Small" title="Helidiving the wreck of the Superior Producer."><img class="alignnone" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3381/3584672979_0bf3a4ee79_m.jpg" alt="Helidiving the wreck of the Superior Producer." width="165" height="240" /></a><br />
<em>Now that&#8217;s a heli-drop!!!</em></p>
<p>So there we are, <strong>hanging outside, arm and legs stretched out fully</strong>, one hand over mask and breathing equipment, waiting for the plunge&#8230;. Then suddenly we&#8217;re falling, we pretty high so we have time to soak it up! above us the heli shoots upwards as it suddenly lost about 200 kilo&#8217;s in weight. Then the splash comes, water all around us and the tail of the chopper quickly vanishes from our viewpoint. We&#8217;re done, floating about while the heli goes for the next bunch of drop-outs! What an insane feeling and what a way to go diving, knowing one of the nicest wrecks of the Caribbean(the <a href="http://www.wannadive.net/spot/Central_America/Curacao/Superior_Producer/index.html" target="_blank">Superior Producer</a>) is waiting for us below&#8230;. <strong>we ARE truly lucky!</strong></p>

<p>One doesn&#8217;t stumble into little islands very often. Certainly not tropical ones, but some time ago I had the pleasure of actually doing so. On route while doing a major feature on Caribbean Island Hopping (which later won me <a href="http://www.fotograferen.net/2008/09/winner-caribbean-travel-writer-award.html">this award</a>) we had a stop in Saba <a href="http://www.rud-gr.net/travels/2006/saba/saba.kmz" target="_blank">[check in Google Earth]</a>, a tiny speck of green in a huge ocean of stunning blue.</p>
<p><object classid="clsid:02bf25d5-8c17-4b23-bc80-d3488abddc6b" width="425" height="300" codebase="http://www.apple.com/qtactivex/qtplugin.cab#version=6,0,2,0"><param name="src" value="http://www.rud-gr.net/travels/2006/saba/saba1.mov" /><param name="autoplay" value="true" /><param name="type" value="video/quicktime" /><embed type="video/quicktime" width="425" height="300" src="http://www.rud-gr.net/travels/2006/saba/saba1.mov" autoplay="true"></embed></object></p>
<p><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/-ex3I9JHahW60aNC3FBzVQ" target="_blank"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_gQ4ByUrz1Ms/SRVV5zAtKTI/AAAAAAAArD0/cRyUVIuYlf0/s288/img_1402-small.jpg" alt="" /></a><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/Wk00QjrY1uND_eTCDmU9FA" target="_blank"><img src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_gQ4ByUrz1Ms/SRVV7FHdJPI/AAAAAAAArEE/u8HhozmHhTI/s288/img_1409-small.jpg" alt="" /></a></p>
<p>It&#8217;s a little known island which is great because not too many visitors actually manage to get there. It&#8217;s so small, the Tourism Office usually knows exactly how many tourists are on the island at any given time. Very tiny indeed then, which makes it a fantastic place to beat the crowds while still being able to do some decent exploring.</p>
<p><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/WJHrkVfGr0YQaQ9s_LvdNw" target="_blank"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_gQ4ByUrz1Ms/SRVV20EJhOI/AAAAAAAArDE/blboR9Cjk7o/s400/img_1179-small.jpg" alt="" /></a><br />
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/MzZ0P7zXgbGSntw6kN6o1w" target="_blank"><img src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_gQ4ByUrz1Ms/SRVV3zNiLjI/AAAAAAAArDU/cA4cJPX2UuA/s400/img_1258-small.jpg" alt="" /></a></p>
<p>Besides being a very small, the way to get there is quite unusual as too. Saba sports the smallest commercial airstrip in the world and at a length of a mere 400 meters it&#8217;s a sight to behold! Landing, while sitting behind an open cockpit of a Twin Otter [<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6RU_fk6zNmc" target="_blank">Youtube, 250.000 views in one year</a>], is quite something as the only space to build the strip was <a href="http://www.airliners.net/photo/-/-/1146078/L/" target="_blank">a stretch of lava</a> at the far end of the island. Yes, Saba is volcanic and that is also one of the main attractions: Mt.Scenery, an old volcanic dome which makes for a fantastic climb.</p>
<p><object classid="clsid:02bf25d5-8c17-4b23-bc80-d3488abddc6b" width="425" height="300" codebase="http://www.apple.com/qtactivex/qtplugin.cab#version=6,0,2,0"><param name="src" value="http://www.rud-gr.net/travels/2006/saba/saba2.mov" /><param name="autoplay" value="true" /><param name="type" value="video/quicktime" /><embed type="video/quicktime" width="425" height="300" src="http://www.rud-gr.net/travels/2006/saba/saba2.mov" autoplay="true"></embed></object></p>
<p>Going up through the lush green forest of the island one notices that the volcano blocks the moist air from the sea which makes for a lot of clouds and plenty of hillside rain! You need to be lucky to catch a good view because one minute it can be crystal clear, a minute later fog is all you will see. The good thing is that all off the rain makes this stunning island with a green color rarely seen in the Caribbean. Fortunately the inhabitants were smart enough to insist on a rigorous building code: all the houses are tiny cottages built in one style. You won’t find a more pittoresq place in this area easily.</p>
<p><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/YVKuJTxb_fK2_iQBWLIN0A" target="_blank"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_gQ4ByUrz1Ms/SRVV430T5bI/AAAAAAAArDk/NtMeB0BmpDw/s400/img_1302-small.jpg" alt="" /></a><br />
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/pt2Cs2hYXHa6nlAbcsKsXg" target="_blank"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_gQ4ByUrz1Ms/SRVV5sxSnwI/AAAAAAAArDs/3hqf81mzJHI/s400/img_1390-small.jpg" alt="" /></a></p>
<p>The climb up the volcano isn&#8217;t really tough but the heat makes it strenuous during the hour and a half long ascent (1064 steps to be precise). But the higher one gets the more extreme the plantation gets as well: lush trees with huge leaves make you feel like you&#8217;re walking in a Jurassic Park setting but then, when you reach the top, the view is just unbelievable. This island is a pure tropical gem in the Caribbean seas, simply stunning and if you&#8217;re lucky the skies stay clear long enough to enjoy the view from all sides. Definitely worth the title of a Favorite View of the World!</p>
