Weekly Random Shot: Holland under water

People regularly ask me if there is anything to see under water in the Netherlands. When scuba-diving comes up in a discussion in my home country it is rarely understood that bad visibility doesn’t mean there’s nothing to see. On the contrary, below the waterline the world is teeming with life and I think this photo shows that perfectly. So, if you’re willing to battle the often poor viz you’ll be in for a surprise!

The Unox New Years Dive saw 10.000+ people jumping into the icecold North Sea at Scheveningen Beach in The Netherlands. A great and fun event to photograph, especially if your equipment doesn’t fail on you.

El Hierro for Duikmagazine

Report on scuba-diving El Hierro, the smallest and most western of the Canary Islands. Until the 15th century people thought this place was the end of the world so the meridian even went through it.

Nowadays it’s an amazing and peaceful island untouched by the claws of mass-tourism. A perfect place for diving and an incredible place to view topside nature. It holds rainforests, pine forests, endless lava fields, rocky cliffs and some nice and small harbours. A perfect place to be honest, no wonder it’s a Unesco Biosphere Reserve!

Just had to upload these two quickly, taken from the infamous Unox Nieuwjaarsduik 2010 (click here for 2008 and 2009). This year turned out the best from the three tries I’ve done so far in making these images with my drysuit and underwater camera. More shots later today or enjoy me at work (20:21) in this item at the main RTL4 News for January 1st.

I’m very happy with the new Duikamagzine (Dive Magazine) that just came out, a four page article on one of my favorite subjects of 2008: the Turtle beach at Ras al Jinz (check here for an earlier article on this website in English ).

Always my first assignment of the year: the Unox Newyears dive in Scheveningen!
Boy, what a great way to start early on January 1st.

With the cold this years edition saw less people joining the dive (about 7.000 instead of the usuall 10.000) but was it a dive indeed: everbody waited to the last second before jumping in en masse! Never saw such a spectacular dive here, altough it was over really, really quickly: just 6 minutes and the Northsea was empty again. Jup, it was cold indeed.

This months Duikmagazine opens with a 10-page article on my favorite diving destination, the Barkley Sound [open in Google Earth] in Vancouver Island. The place where you can finde the Dutch/Canadian operator Rendezvous Diving, one of the best places ever!

It is starting out to be a bit of a Port Ghalib fest on this website as (see here and here), again, there is another publication on this brand new resorttown. This time a massive 8-page checkout in the Dutch diving magazine Duikmagazine. The article is about the resort as well as the fantastic diving with the guys from Emperor Divers who run a very nice operation over there. Surely one of the best spots in Egypt that easily accesible as Port Ghalib is about ten minutes away from the Marsa Alam airport. Resort quality? Let’s just say that it’s the only place in Egypt where I’ve found it to be safe to eat the salads and fruits in the hotels.
