What an edition again! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a houseparty go this mental as was the case with David Guetta’s performance. Even though I’m not the biggest fan of his music, his crowd interaction will give me goosebumps for quite some time to come. In my opinion Tomorrowland is certainly one of the best parties of the year with a great atmosphere, relaxed people, amazing stages and a simply well though out event.
Photo was taken at the 10 year Anniversary party of Awakenings: Awakefest in the Recreation Area Halfweg. June 26th 2010
When I entered the tent where James Holden was performing I immediately saw this couple at the front of the crowd.
I always have one camerabody with a telelens ready to shoot at these large events (which means: set at Av). Sometimes you have to act so quickly there is no time to adjust your settings properly on manual. So this one was taken with a maximum open aperture (f5) with my 100-400mm Canon EF f4.5-5.6. While shooting I adjusted to -2/3 of a stop in order to get a darker image and a slightly higher shuttertime (at 800ISO). I was hoping to get the couple frozen (they weren’t moving, so that was easy) with a blurred crowd behind them due to movement.
Fortunately the lens has stabilization so I can take really low shuttertimes (1/13th in this image) with my pretty steady hand. Took a whole bunch of shots and this one came out nicest (some are sharper but I like the people moving next to them, like the guy on the left, in this shot).
Converted it to B&W in Photoshop to get some more focus on the couple: reds turned up in the B&W control panel and then used levels to deepen the blacks and finally slightly upped their mouthes with a mask and then adjusting with the curve tool as there was a bit of shadow in that part of the shot.
While enjoying the late news on TV I had to close the curtains to keep the low setting sunrays out of my eyes. It didn’t bother my cat though and through the drapes I could see her continue her late afternoon bathing ritual. Fortunately my camera was within reach and I started snapping away.
Kind of like to spookiness and the softness of both shots and the yawning looks really scary. Too bad I didn’t get that crop perfect although it still looks kind of cool.
Used my long lens (100-400), set at about 300mm with an AV exposure at f5.6 (400ISO). The image stabilizer and a knee as a single-pod prevented motion blur at this low shutterspeed for such a heavy lens.
Added a bit (ca 15%) of saturation to regain the warmth that was lost in the camera processing of the image.
As a proud dad of a gloriously happy little girl I end up taking zillions and zillions of photo’s. Just recently the whole family moved over to Curaçao for a decent relaxation and a tiny bit of underwaterwork. I decided to post images from our girl more recent on my Flickr account and a few favorite ones on the website. Please enjoy, I hope she makes you smile!
Thank you for reading my blog in such large numbers the last couple of years, recently I past 500.000 pageviews on my site in 4 years and the Flickr photohosting took well over half a million views, in 2009 alone!
So, I´d like to wish everybody all the best for 2010 and please enjoy the holidays.
Tomorrowland 2009 Widescreen Wallpapers (1600×1000 pixels): lot’s of lasers and fireworks and one of the craziest Mainstages I have ever seen!
Also three up-close DJ Wallpapers: David Guetta, Derrick May and Paul van Dyk.
Just a small set (43 images) of my favorite photo’s from Sundays’ Tomorrowland 2009 edition. As won’t be having a lot of time the next few days it might take me a bit longer to upload a full gallery. So, until then: enjoy these shots and wait for more to come.
Tomorrowland Wallpapers will be ready before the weekend.
[UPDATE] A large gallery of Saturday images here. [UPDATE II] And a full set of Sundays images here.

Some guys have all the luck I guess, quite often I feel like I’m one of them but last week there was no doubt about it whatsoever. After doing a small press-release for the Telegraaf (the largest Dutch newspaper) on heli-diving in Curaçao, which is exclusively organized by a good friend of mine he suddenly asked me if I’d like to do it myself tomorrow?
After less than a nanosecond, a huge smile on my face and a big “Are you kidding me?” things were taken care of and a day later we were setting our gear up on a small industrial platform near the huge oil-harbor of Willemstad. With me were Belgium adventurer Marc Sluszny, underwater photographer Peter Verhoog and Walther Bruckschen, a German Journalist, the lucky bunch so to speak!
As a heli-dive is not completely without danger we had to do a full-gear practice inside the hangar which had a very good airco. Just imagine practicing this sort of thing with full wetsuit and heavy scuba gear in the soaring 35 degree weather of this tropical paradise! Most importantly is the jumping out of the heli: if this isn’t done in perfect sync the heli can easily tilt and that’s something you don’t want 2 meters above the surface of a sea! The trick is a third person inside the heli that holds both divers hands while they climb outside and hang backward fully. Literally your faith is in this guys hands as he controls the moment to drop, it’s simply out of your hands.
The Amazing view over Willemstad from the chopper.
And what a drop it is! After an intensely beautiful flight under the impressive Julianabrug, along Willemstad and all its bright colors, the low pass over the Pontjesbrug with many people waving and taking photographs (the helicopter is open so they see you in full scuba-gear) it’s time for a sharp right turn over the stunning blue seawater and the approach to the wreck site. Niels Jorissen, the owner of DivecharterCuracao and the organizer of these heli-dives, is already waiting with his 25 feet Tornado RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) so all we have to do is climb out and wait for the right hovering height of the helicopter.
Now that’s a heli-drop!!!
So there we are, hanging outside, arm and legs stretched out fully, one hand over mask and breathing equipment, waiting for the plunge…. Then suddenly we’re falling, we pretty high so we have time to soak it up! above us the heli shoots upwards as it suddenly lost about 200 kilo’s in weight. Then the splash comes, water all around us and the tail of the chopper quickly vanishes from our viewpoint. We’re done, floating about while the heli goes for the next bunch of drop-outs! What an insane feeling and what a way to go diving, knowing one of the nicest wrecks of the Caribbean(the Superior Producer) is waiting for us below…. we ARE truly lucky!

With many, many thanks to:
Niels from DiveCharterCuracao who organizes these heli-drops, unique in the world.
George from Blue Skies for making his heli available to us.

Loud, fast, a zillion lasers and quite a crowd: that was the 2009 edition of In Qontrol, Q-Dance‘s massive hardcore/hardstyle event in the RAI Venue in Amsterdam. Not much to say about it, the photo’s speak for themselves… if you like laser images: this is a photo-collection you’ll like!
