Finally got a video that was aired in Rotterdam on RTV Rijnmond last year on my work as a wintersport/snowboard photographer. It’s in Dutch though, the item was taped at the Oxbow Opening of the 2007 season in Les Deux Alpes (France).

Now this is the way I like it: action & party in one big event, that must be the Belgium Ski and Snowboard Open 2008. Why have a contest only when you can go big with live performances by Triggerfinger, Milkshakerz, Luc de Vos, Turntable Dubbers and the amazing guy in the green mask: Dr Lektroluv. All of this in the European Alps version of Vegas: the French partytown Les Deux Alpes.
It’s Sunday now and I have just one day to recuperate from a crazy week of snowboarding that is used as an excuse by about 850 belgiums to party bigtime! The Belgium Champs were never bigger than this, that’s for sure so it’s going to be interesting how they are going to top this one next year.

A month ago we headed out to Austria to see wether we could still find fresh powder snow. Not an easy task as it hadn’t snowed in almost three weeks. But then it’s good to have some Dutch locals with you, as long as it’s cold you can still find pow. These pictured wallpapers prove it. Some images from the Dutch Ski Champs in a way too warm Austria. Besides a few too many stressed out parents it’s really a nice sport to photograph. The action looks really good really quickly and there’s plenty of atmosphere to shoot as well.

Wie wel eens wat anders wil dan zwarte pistes, après-skibars en vol gesneeuwde dennenbomen kan tegenwoordig terecht in het hooggelegen Tignes in Frankrijk. Op 2000 meter is daar een flink gat in het ijs van het plaatselijke meer gezaagd zodat zelfs de meest fanatieke duiker zijn of haar verslaving kan botvieren tijdens de wintersport.
Een raar idee is het wel: het ene moment sta je met de ski’s aan bij de skilift en nog geen uur later hangen je voeten in het water over de rand van een wak, klaar om het ijswater in te gaan. Dat alleen al is vreemd genoeg maar het feit dat je zelfs geen koude tenen hebt bij de eerste aanraking met het water is een aangename verrassing. Een dik droogpak en een volgelaatsmasker zorgen ervoor dat er van koude rillingen geen sprake is. Integendeel, het zonnetje om ons heen zorgt voor een meer dan comfortabele temperatuur in het pak.
We werpen een laatste blik op de prachtige en witte bergtoppen om ons heen, halen even nog een keer goed adem en dan zijn we klaar om kopje onder te gaan. De zon, op deze hoogte toch al zo sterk, straalt schitterend door het wak als we vanuit de diepte naar boven kijken. Voor de veiligheid zijn we gezekerd aan een stalen kabel die onder het ijs hangt. Erg diep gaan we dus niet, met een meter of acht is het maximum wel bereikt.
Het is niet eenvoudig een beschrijving te geven hoe het is om te duiken onder een decimeters dikke laag ijs. De luchtbellen die na het uitademen het ijs bereiken, schieten wild weg op zoek naar een uitgang die er niet is terwijl zonlicht in prachtige dikke bundels door de wakken heen straalt. Het is net alsof je in een heel andere, zeer surrealistische, wereld zweeft.
Aan het einde van de stalen veiligheidslijn steken we ons hoofd door een wak dat er anders uit ziet dan de andere: bij deze schijnt slechts een zwak licht door de waterspiegel. We komen dan ook boven water in een heel klein ijsgrotje. Niks geen weids uitzicht over het bergmeer en besneeuwde bergpieken. Nee, alleen prachtig gelaagd ijs in de vorm van een koepel. Heel bijzonder en een mooi moment om je te realiseren dat we nog lekker een hele terugweg hebben om te genieten.
IJsduiken in het wintersportoord Tignes kan elke dag van half december t/m begin april. Gebruik van de apparatuur (droogpak, volgelaatsmasker, BCD, etc.) is inbegrepen in de prijs van € 70. Een duik duurt gemiddeld ca. 15 minuten maar daarna ben je ook wel aardig uitgeput vanwege de ijle lucht die heerst op deze hoogte.
Sinds vorig jaar kan er ook ’s nachts worden gedoken waarbij de kans groot is forel tegen te komen. Nachtduiken vinden alleen op woensdag plaats en kosten € 80 (max. 4 personen). Een combinatieticket voor een dag- en een nachtduik is € 130.

Don’t you just love it when a season starts like this… arriving in snowy conditions with a new Landrover Freelander 2. Set on wintermode… no chains necessary while some dumbass 4×4 just slides off the road in front of you because he has shitty traction control and way too much speed.
Then, you wake up to a day of grey which is an excellent excuse for a decent sleep in. Nothing beats that after a day’s driving from Holland (when you just returned from an alomst continuous trip in 35 degree weather in Thailand and Egypt the weeks before). Coffee and croissants, one can survive on a diet like that!
But we all know that after grey come blue and we hit it right on in a surprisingly quiet Les 2 Alpes, France. A resort mostly know for it’s incredibly shitty lift system and long walks because crucial parts of the area go uphill instead of down.
Anyway, the Dutch opening has landed here so we have to make the best of it… not that hard with about 40cm fresh and a bluebird. You just forget the stress we had making these (a quiet Les 2 Alpes is still busy as hell so the good bits are tracked in nanoseconds) and enjoy. Hope we all have plenty of this in 2008, it’s looking good already!
