Winter-Showcase [2007-2011]
Scraping left-over bits of powder from everywhere we came up with quite a few great shots on this Austria roadtrip. No wonder, because when shooting with Timo Hermeler it’s usually impossible not to return with gems like this. [St. Anton, Austria. 2008]

A few weeks ago I was asked to setup a showcase series with my favorite wintersports photos for the popular Tacky website. But as they have a strict policy of not showing ski-photos, which I love taking, I decided to upload the whole series of 44 images onto my own website too. I’m a wintersports photographer in a broad sense, I hope this shows a bit of what I love doing so much and why. It’s a story into my work, I hope you enjoy it! Click here for the full gallery!

Winter-Showcase [2007-2011]
Simply the best view in the Alpes, high on top at Les 2 Alpes watching over the Mt.Blanc. Privileged! [Les 2 Alpes, France.2007]

Winter-Showcase [2007-2011]
There’s no better start to a skitest photoshoot than this! Fresh pow, a deserted skiresort and a mountain with a perfect angle. Even better when it’s snowboardcross coach Frank Germann kicking ass! [Bad hofgastein, Austria.. 2009]

Winter-Showcase [2007-2011]
As the Dutch Ski Associations head photographer I also do the skiing. From a photography point of view a very worthwhile job, espcially if you get photos like these from the champ; Alwin de Quartel. [Schladming, Austria. 2009]

Winter-Showcase [2007-2011]
The Belgium freestyle champsionships is an insane party week that features some amazing snowboarding. Especially the kickers are always huge and Seppe Smits knows what to do with them. [Les 2 Alpes, France. 2010]

Winter-Showcase [2007-2011]
Bad light is no excuse for bad photos. Though it does help when your subject is Richard Molenaar, one of the most stylish skiiers I know, dressed in near-fluor colors. Ans yes, this is very close! [Sölden, Austria. 2011]

Winter-Showcase [2007-2011]
The Berghuis sisters have become like sisters to me after all these years of shooting. But Britt somehow managed to avoid getting a decent powder photo taken. Then, suddenly, it all came together: a small stretch of fresh cold powder that needed to be shredded. After a small discussion we both ran to our positions and this was the result. Ten minutes later that whole stretch was completely done for by a zillion tourists. [Les 2 Alpes, France. 2007]

Winter-Showcase [2007-2011]
Perhaps one of my all-time favorite ski-photos. It all came down to a matter of good timing and Gebke Compeer understood just that. To me it just shows the ultimate freedom of beeing in the snow. [Bad hofgastein, Austria. 2009]

Winter -Showcase [2007-2011]
After a long testweek photoshoot it is fun to fool around a bit with a massive block of icey snow, leftover from the Hannibal show on the Sölden glacier. Rens de Wild knows what to do with it. [Sölden, Austria. 2011]

A Bird's Eye view on the skislopes

While shooting the snowboard and skitest for the Dutch “Wintersport Magazine” I was using the same skilift over and over again and felt it was really great for doing some shot from above as it came over the skislopes really low at a specific part.
All what was needed was a bit of good timing and a bit of good luck. With one test run (and some walkie-talkies) we managed to get speed perfectly right and while the skiers went underneath me I just had to lean out of the chairlift adn shoot a ton of pictures.
The end result came out incredibly good and I totally fell in love with this shot: it really embellishes the way you feel when on the slopes with friends. The shadows give it a really nice touch too and the spraying snow from the skies couldn’t have been more perfect, this is wintersports!

The image has been cropped slightly and was pulled a bit brighter with the curves tool. Just minor adjustments to a photo that hardly needed any work. It was shot with a manual setting at 1/1600th at f6.3 with 100ISO. 15mm fisheye lens on a Canon 1D MkIII (1.3 magnification factor).

Two Omani at the Niswa Fortress.

As I’m planning a new trip to my favorite Middle-eastern country, Oman, hopefully in April I thought it would be nice to pick one shot from my previous trip in 2008. It belongs to my “Faces of Oman” series for which I photographed ordinary Omani people during a 6 day mad dash around the country for the largest commercial Newspaper (Telegraaf) and Magazine (Veronica Magazine) in the Netherlands.

The photo featured here was taken at the famous Nizwa Fortress, in the Northern part of the country. After having had a tour of the fortress I sat down while some of us went to get some sodas and icecream from the local vendor. As I sat and enjoyed the view over the tower I noticed these two guys taking a peek though one of the tower windows. I realized I just had seconds to capture this image while having to lens-change as well from my 16-35mm to 70-200mm. I figured I just had to try and switched lenses faster than I ever had. I knew the camera was still on semi-automatic (Av 5.6 with -1/3 stop of underexposure) so I just had to point and shoot. Seconds after taking four photos, the guys were off leaving me behind very happy!

The photo is about a 70-80% crop of the original, leaving out a window that was to be seen on the left side of the picture. In photoshop I compensated the color, saturation and levels to adjust for the slightly too warm (red) original.

I was just working on some of my hi-res panorama’s that I somehow end up taking while on the road. Figured it would be nice to share them as well on the website. They have some nice stories behind them sometimes and they are so much fun when you’ve finally managed to stitch them together (although a free little program called “Hugin” helps a lot!)

Kitzbuheler Alps with Wilder Kaiser in the background
Kitzbuhel Panorama
[See location in Google Earth]
While having lost my phone during the day at a photoshoot we figured out it must be lying somewhere in this region so after dinner we used the car to get as close as possible and trace back our route from the day. We were greeted by this incredible sunset in the Kitzbuhler region with the “Wilden Kaiser” mountains as a backdrop and this amazing farmhouse in the last rays os sunshine. I was happy to have brought my Canon G9 just to be sure and boy did I made a good deciscion: what a place to live and to capture on photo! Obviously we didn’t find my cellphone but a little note instead with lipstick writing that the finder had delivered it to the Tourist Office in town. Again, what a place to live!

Thorn, the White Village
Thorn Panorama
[See location in Google Earth]
While on a short three day holiday trip in southern Holland (Limburg) in a most charming little place called Thorn, known for it’s white houses as the “White Village” we had a cosy hotelroom in the middle of the town and from our window we had a fantastic view over a backalley to the right and the spectacularly litmassive Church. With my old Canon G9 I made some vertical photo’s from our window in hope of being able to stitch them back together when home. The result is so typical for the place!

La Bouverie, Southern France
Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur Panorama
[See location in Google Earth]
With inlaws living in the SouthEast of France I’m very blessed. We love taking the smaller roads up there to go though small villages where it seems that time has stood still. One of our favorite viewpoints is this one, just before heading into La Bouverie. A minuscule village that boasts a great winery where we get our wine in boxes (or as South Africans call it so nicely “Dooswijn”). Again a panorama taken with my trusty G9, a great camera if it weren’t for the clumsy controls and horrible flash settings.

Sensation White 2009 Wallpaper: Fedde le Grand in Black

It’s final: I’ve stopped uploading wallpapers in the classic 4:3 format. From now on I’ll only be uploading 16:10 (widescreen) wallpapers and because it saves a lot of time not doing them in 2 formats I’ll be compensating that by uploading simply more of them . That’s why I’ve just finished 11 widescreen wallpapers (in hi-res ofcourse) from Saturdays’ Sensation White.
